@Jeff Thanks for the wise answer to a stupid question :) What I just wanted to point out was that the ad is not relevant to the "content". Underwear is indeed relevant to every human being, but a woman wearing a sexy underwear may not really be relevant to certain people :-)

@Cristóbal I understand your point. However, just because google cannot target well it doesn't mean that targeting sucks. What I wanted to point out was that the ad is just not relevant to the content. Maybe relevant in terms of demographics, but not in terms of content.

[...] This is what happens when Ads are not relevant to your content [jokerred] EXCERPT: “I came across this while reading Jeff Jarvis’s blog. It doesn’t appear at the top URL, but you can see the displayed ad when you visit any permalink. Notice the top right side of the blog. I was quite surprised to find this image on his blog at first because I thought this was his profile image. Then I saw the captions attached below the picture that said: “Buy Buzzmachine blogads now!”. Oh, it was an ad. But you know, whether it’s an ad or not, it did hurt his image a little at least. I wonder if he’s aware of this. That ad is apparently transmitting a sexual message, and not many people who read his blog should appreciate it.” [...]

Have you looked at blogads.com? All their ads have to be approved by the bloggers. Jeff at least tacitly approves of every single blogads ad that runs on his site. Whether the blogads ads are relevant to the content is totally up to Jeff.

Furthermore, have you never seen the atrocities that google puts up that are supposedly "relevant" to the content? I've seen blogs that spend five paragraphs trashing McCain and some public gaffe only to have google ads for McCain t-shirts at the bottom. Idiocy.

When targeted web ads aren't as good as untargeted ones...

...I'm sure most people reading his blog use this product known as "underwear" on a regular basis. But I also understand what the reader is getting at -- why an underwear ad on a business blog?......
